During his time as India's head coach, Ravi Shastri used to push players to achieve extraordinary things, but he had very little patience for failure, according to experienced wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik. The 37-year-old had only sometimes featured while Shastri was India's coach, particularly during the 2019 World Cup. The Shastri-Kohli era was successful for Indian cricket, but certain players frequently criticized the pair for failing to stand up for them when they needed a little more understanding.

Karthik stated on Cricbuzz docuseries 'Summer Stalemate', "He (Shastri) had a very poor tolerance for someone who wouldn't bat at a speed he didn't like or someone who was doing extremely differently in the nets and in the match, he would go and bat differently."

"Shastri (the speaker) wouldn't think much of that. Shastri had very little patience for mistakes since he was extremely clear about what he expected of the team and how it should play. He consistently encouraged others to perform well. Karthik, a 36-year-old designated finisher in T20 matches, has previously stated that the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid era has made him feel much safer and at ease.

In Shastri's time as a head coach, India won two Test series against Australia, drew a Test series 2-2 with England, and advanced to the World Test Championship final.

"I believe Shastri was a player who, while perhaps not as great, used his coaching skills to the fullest. He did much better than what he was expected to do. As a coach, he was a larger-than-life person. He was somebody who pushed players to try and achieve special things," he added.
